Dun Deardail Walk in Glen Nevis
Dun Deardail in Glen Nevis is the site of an ancient Iron Age fort located near the West Highland Way at 1,165 feet above sea-level. The walk to Dun Deardail starts from the Braveheart Car Park and takes the route of the West Highland Way, backtracking towards Kinlochleven.
This is an easy, to moderate walk of some 7km with some stunning views over to Ben Nevis and to Stob Ban and the Mamores. Once at the site the view looking down into Glen Nevis is almost alpine and quite superb. On the way back down you can make your way to the Lower Falls and then walk along the road in the glen to your car. On the way you will pass Cafe Beag and Glen Nevis Restaurant - which we recommend as one of Fort William's good restaurants and bars.
This walk is really a fair weather walk as the last part is quite exposed and rather pointless if you can't see the mountains - The Steall Falls walk through Glen Nevis gorge is a better wet day walk as there is a reasonable amount of shelter in several parts and is more stimulating to see the various tiny cascading streams and to hear the river thunder below the path as it drains into the glen.
Winter walks in Fort William
We walked up to Dun Deardill in February 2010 during a pleasant snowy period with beautiful clear skies. You can see the photographs of this Glen Nevis walk, in winter time from here. We should remind you however, that walking in ice and snow conditions is potentially dangerous and you should take great care when out walking at all times.
