Visitor Centres in Fort William

Around the Fort William area are a number of first class visitor centres and places of interest. One of our most anient landmarks is the ruin of Old Inverlochy Castle which is easy to find nearby the Esso filling station, a few hundred metres off the A82 road.

During the summer months the Jacobite Steam train goes past the castle on its way over the River Lochy and journey out to Mallaig. The Jacobite Steam Train leaves Fort William most mornings at 10:20 and returns in the afternoon just after 16:00hrs

Fort William's Nevis Centre is our largest public hall and indoor activity centre complete with Cafe, bar, 10 pin bowling, kiddies play area and multi-purpose sports hall. Nearby at the Town Pier, Souter's Lass offers short sea trip excursions down Loch Linnhe. Other operators provide sea-life adventure day trips to explore the sea-life and bird life. Views of the surrounding mountains from Loch Linnhe are fabulous, and always changing. Each year in May, the paddle steamer Waverley visits Fort William for day trips to Iona.

The Ben Nevis Distillery is one of Fort William's oldest established businesses and produces Dew Of Ben Nevis - one of Scotland's best single malt and blended whiskies. The distillery's visitor centre is well worth visiting and the home-made food in their cafe is excellent.

Over in Corpach Treasures of the Earth provide a fabulous insight into fossils and jem stones - kids and big kids love it.

The Glen Nevis Visitor Centre is operated by Highland Council - our local government - and provides quality information about Glen Nevis and of course Ben Nevis. There is good car parking and toilet facilities and is by far the best place to start a walk up Ben Nevis.

The West Highland Museum in Fort William's town centre welcomes you to visit them and see a unique collection of Jacobite memorabilia.

Nevis Range is Fort William's all year, outdoor mountain activity centre located 7 miles from the town centre.  Built in the late 1990's Nevis Range operate the only Gondola mountain cable car in the UK. During the spring, summer and autumn Nevis Range is a mecca for downhill mountain biking. Covered in forestry the area of Aonach Mor in the Leanachan Forest offers over 30kms of paths and cycle-ways for everyone to enjoy. Nevis Range has a cafe at the bottom gondola station and a shop and restaurant at the top station with a balcony providing panoramic views looking over to the west.
